Man rapes his granny, claims evil spirits told him to do so

A 57-year-old Hwange man who could not control his sexual demons left the court stunned when he claimed that evil spirits had told him to rape his 92-year-old neighbour, the Sunday News reported.

Fabian Vange Sibanda (57) of Change Village 1, Hwange, told the court that in his drunken stupor he heard voices telling him to have sex with his 92-year-old neighbour.

The regional magistrate for the Western Division, Mrs Dambudzo Malunga, heard that on 12 July at around 2.30am, Sibanda, who was also facing a charge of unlawful entry, arrived at his home from a beer drink and proceeded to complainant's homestead where he forcefully opened the door and entered her house.

Prosecuting, Mr Tawanda Sigauke told the court that while inside he grabbed the complainant who was asleep on the bed by her hands resulting in her screaming for help in a state of shock but no one came. Sibanda went outside to check if her screams had alerted anyone and after observing no sign of anyone coming, he returned to the house.

He started looking for his victim who had hidden under the bed and found her before pulling her out. He stripped her before raping her once. During the process as she struggled to free herself, she got hold of Sibanda's necklace.

After he had finished the act, Sibanda opened the door and his victim discovered that he was holding a knife and a box of matches.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Sibanda's arrest. Meanwhile, the complainant was taken to hospital for examination where a medical report was produced in court as evidence.

Before passing her sentence after finding Sibanda who pleaded guilty to the charges guilty, Mrs Malunga asked him why he had committed the offence. Sibanda claimed evil spirits were responsible for his actions that particular night.

"Your worship I don't know what came over me. I just heard spirits telling me to do it. I didn't have control over it your worship; the evil spirits drove me to do such a terrible thing," said a remorseful Sibanda.

He was sentenced to an effective 12 years imprisonment after the two charges were taken as one.
