A woman shoved her new born baby boy in a plastic bag and dumped it in a sewer pond in Plumtree Town.
Council workers discovered the body while cleaning the pond last weekend.
A council worker, Stamps Mugandi said the infant's body was wrapped in a towel and discarded in a plastic bag.
"We were working on one of the sewer ponds when we spotted a bag floating on the water on Sunday morning.
"We became curious as we had not seen the bag the previous day yet we were working in the same area," he said.
"We retrieved the bag and in it we found a baby's body neatly dressed and wrapped in a towel. The baby was probably dumped while it was still alive." Mugandi said they suspected the baby was dumped on Saturday evening.
"The baby appeared to be a couple of days old.
"We were left shocked by this discovery as baby dumping is a sign of being heartless. We alerted the police who attended the scene," he said.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.
"I confirm that a baby's body was picked up at a sewer pond in Plumtree.
"The body was discovered by some men who were at the pond on Sunday around 10AM.
"Police attended the scene and retrieved the body which was in a small bag. No arrests have been made so far," he said.
Insp Ndebele appealed to members of the public to assist police with information, which might lead to the arrest of the culprit.
