DISCONTENT over the poor performance by pupils who sat for last year's Ordinary Level examinations seems to have spilled into homes, following an incident where a man assaulted his brother and sister-in-law during a misunderstanding over the results.
Calptous Nyathi (28) of 762 Empumalanga township in Hwange pleaded guilty when he appeared before Hwange magistrate Mrs Rose Dube facing two counts of malicious damage to property and negligently causing bodily harm.
According to the State represented by Mr Tinomupeyi Mbiza, on 13 February at around 11pm, Nyathi had a misunderstanding with his younger brother, Calvin, over his delay in collecting his O-level results when he was asked to do so. Nyathi is reported to have facilitated his brother's writing of examinations by paying his fees as Calvin, who lives with his wife, is unemployed.
Nyathi became angry and stormed out of the house where he took an iron bar and hit the door panel which broke to pieces as a result. While he was trying to gain access to the house to assault Calvin, he injured Calvin's wife who together with her husband were trying to restrain Nyathi by blocking the door from inside.
She suffered a broken finger as a result of the tussling and property worth $25 was destroyed. The matter was reported to the police leading to Nyathi's arrest.
He was lucky to escape a custodial sentence when his three-month sentence for the first count was wholly suspended.
His 12-month sentence for the second count was set aside on condition that he completed 280 hours of community service at Hwange magistrate's courts.
