THE $16 000 monthly package being paid to Gwanda town clerk Gilbert Mlilo, who retires in May this year, has resulted in a massive response for the job advertised a fortnight ago.
Although the number of applicants could not be ascertained, a council source told Southern Eye yesterday that the response had been overwhelming.
"A number of people have shown interest in the job and the number of applications is unprecedented," the council official who requested anonymity said.
The source said current Gwanda Town Council chamber secretary Priscilla Nkala was among the applicants.
The massive response for the job follows revelations by this paper that senior managers in the municipality were paying themselves handsomely while service delivery continued to collapse.
Mlilo's bid to have his stay extended was turned down by councillors who reportedly felt he had overstayed his welcome.
