A GWANDA man who went berserk when he found chickens feeding on his porridge and then severely assaulted his father for reprimanding him over his cruelty to animals, will spend the next 18 months behind bars.

Mbonisi Dube (31) pleaded guilty to charges of physical abuse against his father Leonard Dube (51) when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Olivia Mashava Mashaire yesterday.

He was sentenced to 24 months, but six months were suspended for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence.

In passing sentence, Mashaire said Dube exhibited lack of respect for his father.

She said it was also aggravatory that the accused had used a garden fork in attacking his father.

The court heard that on March 3 at around 11:30am at his father's homestead at Mtshabezi village, Mbonisi arrived home from doing a piece job with his younger brother Nkosiphile.

He took a plate of porridge from the kitchen and went outside to wash his face and in the process put the plate down.

When he finished washing his face, he found some chickens eating his porridge and kicked them.

His father rebuked him and Dube was infuriated. He allegedly went to fetch an axe from the kitchen, but could not find it. He then grabbed a garden fork and struck his father three times.

A medical report produced in court indicated that Dube's father sustained a deep cut in the head and on the elbow.

He was heavily bandaged on the head and wore an arm sling when he appeared in court.
