A Gweru man shot and injured his wife's two brothers after they had intervened in a domestic dispute that he was having with her.
Esau Mabhena, 51, of Skhupa Village under Chief Sogwala, Lower Gweru, appeared before magistrate Morgan Nemadire facing two counts of attempted murder.
His wife, Bekithemba Mangena, collapsed in disbelief after her husband was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Nemadire had just finished sentencing Mabhena when Mangena suddenly fell in the gallery and fainted.
Court and prison officers rendered first aid.
She was later carried out of the court room to an office where she continued to receive first aid until she regained consciousness.
The State's case against Mabhena, was that on March 9 last year, he had a misunderstanding with Mangena which led into a physical fight.
The court heard that Mabhena's daughter, fearing for her mother's life, rushed to her uncle's homestead, which is a stone's throw away from their homestead to look for help.
She informed her uncles, Welcome and Petros Moyo, about the fight and the two accompanied her back home.
While at Mabhena's homestead, the two brothers tried to restrain Mabhena whom they found beating up their sister.
Mabhena became violent and attacked the two with open hands. They fled but he followed them to their homestead, armed with a rifle.
Sensing danger, the two locked themselves inside a hut but Mabhena opened fire through a closed door injuring the two brothers on the legs.
Petros was injured on both legs while Welcome was injured on his right leg.
They screamed for help and were saved by fellow villagers who rushed to the scene and later took them to hospital.
A report was made to the police leading to Mabhena's arrest. He was represented by Evidence Gonese of Gonese and Partners law firm while Ndamuka Chikuni prosecuted.
