Teenager kills grandmother over money for beer

For the love of beer, a 19-year-old Bulilima man reportedly strangled his 71-year old grandmother  because she would not give him money to go for a drink.

Wahlile Nkomo from Hingwe area in Madlambuzi, then stole R1 900 from the corpse.

He allegedly committed a cultural taboo by touching his dead grandmother, Wanni Sibanda's breasts as he took the money that she had hidden between them.

The incident occurred around 10 pm on Saturday.

Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Christopher confirmed the murder.

He said Sibanda had sold two head of cattle and Nkomo demanded some of it to go and drink beer.

Asst Insp Ngwenya said Nkomo sneaked into his grandmother's bedroom hut intending to steal the money and found her awake.

"He strangled her, took the money and covered her with a blanket," said Asst  Insp Ngwenya.

He said as Nkomo went out of the hut, he met his sister Lucia Sibanda who was coming to check on her grandmother after hearing noises coming from her bedroom.

He said Nkomo told his sister that their grandmother was asleep.

Ass Insp Ngwenya said the following day, Lucia discovered her grandmother's body and made a report to the police.

"Nkomo was arrested and was found with R1, 710," he said.
