AN Indian man who was arrested for shooting eight video footage of the front part of Beitbridge Prison, prison guards at work and prison vehicles has been fined R4 000 or 28 days in jail.

Abdul Ghameed Abbas (23) of Pretoria in South Africa was convicted for contravening Section 36(1)(c) of the Immigration Act Chapter 4;02 (making a false declaration) and contravening Section 4(5)(a) of the Protected Places and Areas Act Chapter 11;12 (surveying or making sketches or taking photographs on premises).

It was revealed that on March 18 this year, Abbas made a false declaration at the Beitbridge border post that he was visiting house number 2989 Dulibadzimu Township when he knew that he was going to Beitbridge Prison.

Abbas visited his relatives who were remanded in custody at Beitbridge Prison and while there, he started filming the prison complex using his Nokia E72 cellphone.

He was seen by prison officers who stopped him and confiscated the cellphone. Abbas pleaded guilty to both counts when he appeared before Beitbridge magistrate Gloria Takundwa.
