A MANGWE businessman has been fined for selling expired foodstuffs to customers. Jephias Ncube (41) appeared before Plumtree magistrate Mr Gideon Ruvetsa after detectives found expired tinned jam stocked in his shop.
Ncube runs Mayibongwe General Dealer at Tshitshi Business Centre in Mangwe District.
He was ordered to pay $100 or spend 20 days in prison.
Prosecuting, Mr Medica Tshuma said police detectives received information that Ncube was selling expired goods in his shop.
"On 25 March detectives that were on patrol at Tshitshi Business Centre received information to the effect that Ncube was selling expired goods.
"They proceeded to his shop where they found 11 tins of mixed fruit jam which had expired resulting in his immediate arrest," said Mr Tshuma.
In his defence Ncube said he had charged his shopkeeper with the duty to check on the expiry dates of goods.
"Your Worship it is the responsibility of my shopkeeper to check on expiry dates. It appears she overlooked this. I did not bother to check myself because she is responsible for the day to day running of the shop," he said.
