Corrupt traffic police officers have reportedly devised new ways of accepting bribes in a bid to evade arrest from the crack anti-corruption team.

Kombi drivers plying the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway who spoke on condition of anonymity said traffic police officers have invented new techniques of accepting bribes including using the popular mobile money transfer system Ecocash which they feel it's safer.

"You will notice that wherever there is a roadblock there will be a dust bin were we are made to throw the money inside which they collect at the end of the day but nowadays because of the anti-corruption team others now prefer Eco-cash," said a driver who requested not to be named.

Last Wednesday, Bulawayo residents were treated to some drama as the anti-corruption unit swooped on police officers who were allegedly demanding bribes from motorists.

Some drivers said police now hid their money in bushes to avoid being found in possession of the money.

"Nowadays one of the officers is tasked with depositing the money in a bushy area were it is collected at the end of the day when they knock off," said another driver.

Traffic cops are required to declare their cash before proceeding to any road block.

A Gwanda based police officer was last week jailed for two years after he accepted $460 bribe money via Ecocash.

Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri has warned corrupt police officers that they would be expelled from the force if they engage in corruption.
