Police have started impounding livestock that stray into major highways as they move towards preventing road accidents ahead of the Easter holidays.
The operation which has started in some parts of the country will be rolled out in parts of Matabeleland South province today.
Under the operation livestock that is found to be straying with 50 meters of major highways will be impounded and owners fined $10 per head.
The move comes amid calls from motorists for the transport ministry to erect boundary fences among major highways.
Fatal road accidents have occurred along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway caused by domestic animals which stray into the road.
War veterans who occupy farms along the highway stand accused of stealing perimeter fence resulting in livestock encroaching onto the road.
Traffic along the Bulawayo - Beitbridge highway is set to increase this week as South Africa based Zimbabweans popularly known as injiva head home for the holidays.
