Security at Gwanda Prison has come under spotlight after a woman was arrested on Saturday as she tried to smuggle dagga to her jailed husband.
Chiedza Ndlovu reportedly stuffed five twists of t into some sadza which she served to her husband Bien Mlilo.
Mlilo is serving a six month jail term for theft of gold ore and has been in prison since the 15th of March.
Since his incarceration Ndlovu is said to have been frequently visiting his husband and speculation is now rife that she has evaded security checks in the past whilst smuggling mbanje into prison.
"There is need to improve our prisons so that they are equipped with the latest detection devices, otherwise some of these things (mbanje) will at times evade our attention," said a prison officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Ndlovu is set to appear in court on Tuesday charged with possession of dagga. Meanwhile some Gwanda prison officers are reportedly in hot soup after they allegedly swindled clients of thousands of United States dollars in a brick moulding project.
The officers would order clients to make advance payments before the bricks are moulded, however they failed to honor their promises. Some of the officers have reportedly been summoned for hearings.
