A Nkayi magistrate, prosecutor and a prison guard have been arrested for allegedly duping a rape suspect into paying them a heifer, believing it was for bail.

The trio, Thabekhulu Dube, Maxwell Hapanyengwe and Khumbulani Dube, early this year allegedly asked the suspect to bring a heifer which they said would be sold to pay his bail.

The suspect, reportedly brought the beast in good faith.

The suspect was later acquitted of the charge.

He discovered that the guardians of the law had ripped him off when he went to get a refund of his bail money at the clerk of court's office at the Nkayi Magistrate Court.
He was shocked to discover that there was no record of him ever being granted bail, or paying it.

The suspect made a report to the police and investigations implicated the three, leading to their arrest.

They were not asked to plead when they appeared at the Bulawayo Magistrate Courts at Tredgold Building today.

Their trial has been scheduled for 24 June.
