UPDATE: Fatal taxi accident in Gwanda Town

Four people including an infant are feared dead in a taxi accident in Gwanda Town.

The accident which happened around 14:30hrs Saturday afternoon about 30mins ago of this article has attracted the anger of Gwanda residents who accuse one of the drivers of the two taxis involved of drunken driving. Police and ambulances are still on site and details of the accident are still a bit scratchy.

However, eye witnesses on site indicate that the driver of one of the taxis a Toyota Granvia drove recklessly in front of an oncoming small metered taxi resulting in the two vehicles crushing near head on and the smaller taxi overturning killing a minor on the spot and severely injuring four others. The driver of the Granvia who is accused of being drunk and not co-operating was rescued from the vengeance of the gathering crowd by a swift response from the Police.

Residents claim that the taxi drivers are always seen drinking beer in their taxis and at near by pubs while they wait for their taxis to be given a chance to ferry passengers. The residents claim the police are aware of this trend but are not doing anything about it.

Full details of the accident will be made available as soon as the police have finished clearing the scene which has been crowded by a huge crowd of angry onlookers.
