A LOWER Gweru man escaped death by a whisker after he was struck on the forehead with an axe while at a beer drink last weekend.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the incident which he said happened at Insukamini Business Centre on Saturday at around 10PM.
"We are investigating a case of attempted murder where an adult male was struck once on the forehead with an axe by a suspect who is still at large. The incident occurred outside Insukamini Business Centre near a bottle store in Lower Gweru," he said.
Insp Goko said the complainant, Fonet Mpofu, 29, of Lower Gweru, was drinking beer with the suspect fugitive, Lawrence Moyo of Village 2 Bhudha Resettlement in Lower Gweru.
"The complainant and the suspect were drinking together at a local beer hall at Insukamini Business Centre. Moyo then left for another bottle store leaving Mpofu behind, drinking his beer alone. Later, at around 10PM, Mpofu left the bottle store intending to go home. He met Moyo outside the bottle store holding an axe. Moyo called Mpofu's name three times before striking him once without warning on the forehead," he said.
The Midlands police spokesperson said Moyo went away leaving Mpofu lying on the ground. He said the matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene.
"Mpofu sustained a deep cut on the forehead. He was referred to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he was treated and discharged. Moyo is still at large and investigations are still in progress," said Insp Goko.
Insp Goko advised members of the public to desist from resorting to violence whenever they have some differences.
He said people should always seek third party interventions to solve disputes, whenever possible.
"We are appealing to anyone with information that might help us solve the case to contact the nearest police station. We have since launched a manhunt for Moyo," said Insp Goko.
