A MANGWE man charged with possessing dagga stunned the court - telling the magistrate he used the drug to boost his sexual performance and gain courage to deal with problem animals.
Mzuzomdala Tshabangu, 46, told magistrate Gideon Ruvetsa that smoking dagga gave him more energy to do the unusual.
"Dagga has been helping me in a great way. Whenever I smoke it, I become strong and effective in anything I do. My friends told me that smoking dagga would help me perform better in bed. I also have a problem of animals that invade my fields and eat my crops. Therefore I was smoking dagga as I wanted to gain strength to chase them away," he said.
Tshabangu was arrested after his wife, Sipho, tipped off police detectives that he used dagga, which he stored in their bedroom.
Prosecuting Medica Tshuma said police detectives, acting on the tip off, raided Tshabangu's home on May 22 and found a pack of the drug weighing about 0.112kg hidden under his bed.
Ruvetsa convicted Tshabangu and sentenced him to three months imprisonment, which were wholly suspended on condition he performed 210 hours of community service at Marula Clinic.
In a related case a 31-year-old man from Nxele area, Trust Sibanda was sentenced to 210 hour of community service for selling dagga.
Prosecutors say on May 22 police detectives heard that Sibanda was selling dagga at Nxele Business Centre. They went to the business centre and upon conducting a search found him with two packets of loose dagga valued at $20 in his pockets.
Sibanda pleaded for the court's leniency saying selling dagga was the only source of livelihood he had. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment of which three were conditionally suspended for five years.
The remaining three months were further suspended on condition he performed 210 hours of community service at Zimra Complex.
