A 46-YEAR-OLD man from Jambezi near Victoria Falls allegedly committed suicide last week because he was tired of taunts by his friends that he was poor.

Mubhikwa Mpofu reportedly drank a cocktail of cotrimoxazole pills on Thursday night soon after arriving home from a beer drink at Kanywambizi village under Chief Shana.

Police officer commanding Victoria Falls Superintendent Jairos Chiwona confirmed the suicide.

Mpofu's brother Bhekumuzi said on the day he died he had spent the day drinking beer with his friends.

"He left home at around 4pm to have a beer drink at Michael Shoko's homestead where he had been invited," Bhekimuzi said.

"He came back home at around 10pm and his wife gave him his supper, but he could not eat indicating that he was tired of sour relations with his neighbours and that he felt his life was in danger, but could not reveal to us what had happened."

Mpofu allegedly left the kitchen where everyone was gathered and went to his bedroom hut where he drank the cotrimoxazole pills.

"He left us in the kitchen and proceeded to the bedroom," Bhekumuzi said.

"He took pills that were in the wardrobe belonging to his wife Lekani Dube and drank them.

"Moments later his wife followed him to the bedroom and found him lying down on the floor throwing up and he could hardly breathe.

"They tried to resuscitate him, but failed.

"We immediately ferried him to Victoria Falls Hospital, but he died before we got there."

Mpofu reportedly left a suicide note where he bemoaned being "unloved" by fellow villagers.

"My brother said some of his drink mates were always laughing at him saying he was the poorest man in the whole village," Bhekumuzi said.

Mpofu's body was taken to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo for a post mortem and he will be buried today at Kanywambizi village.
