A 20-YEAR-OLD suspected sex worker from Lupinyu BH 18 close to the Victoria Falls International Airport and two unidentified clients escaped death by a whisker when an alleged scorned client set ablaze the bedroom hut they were sleeping in on Sunday morning.
Linah Ndlovu and her friend Nhlanhla Juliet Ncube (28) are alleged to have brought two men home from Lupinyu bar for the night at her grandmother's homestead. However, Ncube's alleged boyfriend Taspern Kavongo (30) was enraged at the sight of her leaving the bar with another man and threatened to kill her.
The two women suspect that it was Kavongo who set the hut on fire.
The fire destroyed all the clothes and food leaving the family virtually destitute. According to Ncube's grandmother Anna Ngwenya (76), her granddaughter was to blame for the arson attack because of her 'wild and immoral' lifestyle.
"Nhlanhla goes to Lupinyu Bar every night wearing miniskirts to drink beer and she brings different men home every night," she said.
"I used to sleep in the same bedroom hut with her, but ended up moving out with her three-year-old son because she was disrespecting me by sleeping with her men in my presence. On the day of the fire, she left with Linah, who deserted her family to come and prostitute at this growth point.
"I was awoken by many male voices in the yard and then later Nhlanhla came to sleep in my hut. I had a feeling that something was not right, but I didn't inquire.
"Later on I heard a man shouting and asking where Nhlanhla was saying he wanted to kill that 'prostitute' because she had looted all his money. Linah responded that she was still at the bar. He kept on shouting saying he wanted to kill everyone in the hut where they were sleeping in because they were hiding her from him."
Ngwenya said a few minutes later, there were loud screams from Ndlovu and the two men wailing safa bo (we are dying) when they woke up to find the hut ablaze.
"The two men rushed out half-dressed and disappeared," she said.
"All our property was in that hut and we now no longer have any clothes except the ones we are wearing.
"It's even sadder that Nhlanhla's three-year-old son has now been left with just the short and a T-shirt he was wearing the previous night because she does not even support him.
"Every night Nhlanhla comes home drunk and with no food for the men she brings here.
"I am suffering because all my children died and no one is supporting me.
"As you can see, I am making porridge for supper for me and Nhanhla's son because there is no mealie-meal," Ngwenya said.
Southern Eye caught up with Ndlovu and Ncube at Lupinyu bar on Monday evening and found them dancing and drinking alcohol.
The two said Kavongo had set their hut alight because he had always threatened to kill them by burning their homestead.
They said footsteps at the homestead matched the safety shoes he was wearing at the bar on the night of the arson.
The police officer commanding Victoria Falls district Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona said they were still gathering information on the alleged arson.
