A BULILIMA man has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for stabbing his ex-girlfriend with a scissors after failing to stomach their separation.

Sifundo Sibanda, 22, sustained injuries after being stabbed once on the head and several times on her back and right elbow by Maqhawe Ndlovu of Dombodema area, Bulilima.

Prosecuting, Jane Phiri told how on April 15 this year, Ndlovu, 35, stabbed Sibanda after learning that she was having a relationship with another man following their separation.

On the day the crime was committed, Ndlovu was said to have broken into the woman's bedroom while she was asleep and demanded to know why she had dumped him.

He also accused his former girlfriend of having been in love with her new lover before they separated.

"He produced a scissors and stabbed the complainant. Ndlovu fled from the house and left the complainant lying on the floor wounded. He was later arrested on the following day while at his homestead," said Phiri.

In his defence, Ndlovu told the court that he loved Sibanda a lot and could not bear seeing her with another man.

"I later learnt that after she had dumped me Sifundo went on to fall in love another man who is from our area. This did not  go down well with me because I still loved her and I never really got to understand why she had to dump me in the first place.

"The reason why I assaulted her was because I loved her. She should have seen this assault as sign that I loved her and instead of reporting the matter she should have reconciled with me," he said.

Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa sentenced Ndlovu to 24 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not within the period commit a similar offence.
