A Binga police officer stunned a packed courtroom when he said a bus plying the Bulawayo Binga Road was involved in an accident on 23 July while being driven by a man who died last year.
Testifying in the case, Sergeant Nyamawere said he attended an accident scene where two buses collided a few kilometres from Binga.
He said when police took the licence of one of the drivers, they discovered that it was being driven by Bornwel Chawanina who died last year.
Prosecuting, Bruce Maphosa asked how a dead man could drive a bus full of living people.
Sgt Nyamawere said police were confused at first until it emerged that the driver, Luke Machirawando of Kuwadzana in Harare, was using the licence which was in his name, but had the picture of the deceased Chawanina.
Binga Magistrate Stephen Ndlovu heard that Machirawando was driving using a forged licence
Machirawando pleaded guilty to the charge driving with a counterfeit licence and was remanded in custody to 8 August for continuation of trial.
He told the court that a Harare company that was not named in court had organised the licence for him.
