Umguza member of parliament, who is also Transport and Infrastructural Development minister, Obert Mpofu says he will never lose any election in Matabeleland North as he has endeared himself to people by working hard to develop their livelihoods.
Mpofu was speaking during a graduation party for a relative, Thecla Ncube, at her homestead at Sacred Heart, Jambezi Growth Point, Hwange West, on Friday last week. Ncube recently graduated in Masters in Education, Administration and Curriculum Studies (MED) with the Rusangu University in Monza, Zambia.
"I will not lose any election in Matabeleland North under any circumstance. I get the highest votes the whole of Matabeleland and that you can ask anyone in the party," he said, adding that it was because he was the hardest working parliamentarian in the region.
"Ask Harare (sic) they will tell you that I don't lose any election and I get bigger votes even than those of Harare."
Mpofu joined politics in the 1960s where he became a Zapu youth wing member before undergoing military training in Magororo, Zambia in 1968.
He first became a Zanu-PF non-constituency member of parliament in 1987, after that he was to be Bubi-Umguza MP in 1990-95.
In 1985, Mpofu was defeated in an election for the then Hwange-Tsholotsho seat, which went to Zapu's David Kwidini. Mpofu said this was a sign of rejection by his own people.
"I belong here in BH 56 but I came here and you rejected me in the 1985 election. I ended up going to the people of Umguza, who accepted me and made me a member of parliament," he said.
He has been MP for the constituency for three consecutive terms, having narrowly lost to the MDC in 2000.
The former governor and resident minister for Matabeleland North commended the Hwange West people for ‘voting wisely' for Zanu-PF after they voted for Bekithemba Mpofu in the July 2013 elections, saying voting for the opposition was tantamount to voting for no development.
"I would like to thank Hwange West people for making a wise decision by voting wisely, but those of Hwange East will continue to suffer because there will be no development in the near future. I tell you the person they voted for will not build even a single blair toilet in the schools and if he does, don't hesitate to call me, I will come and build 20 of those," he said.
Mpofu urged the villagers to protect the gains of independence by voting for the ruling party, adding that all the schools and clinics in the area were built by the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo and President Robert Mugabe.
