The Gweru City Council has engaged debt collectors in an effort to recover over $25 million owed by defaulting ratepayers.

The debt comes at a time the city owes more than $24 million to his creditors and has been struggling to pay workers on time.

Tapiwa Marerwa, the deputy town clerk, said the debt collection was underway.

Marerwa said they have intensified out debt collection exercise and after this phase hope to recover money owed to council. If the residents pay up, the council hopes it will be able to meet obligations.

The council is also finding it difficult to efficiently collect refuse, while water rationing continues.
