THE acute shortage of qualified teachers has been cited as a contributing factor to the poor performance of schools in Matabeleland south province.
Matabeleland province is still reeling from the effects of a massive brain drain experienced in the country a few years ago with most schools relying on temporary teachers.
Matabeleland South Provincial Director, Mrs Tumisang Tabela said schools especially in Bulilima and Mangwe districts have been the worst affected by the staff shortages as they have failed to attract qualified teachers.
Mrs Tabela made these remarks at the official commissioning of an administration block at Tjahanga Primary School in Bulilima district.
She said 50 percent of science teachers in the province are not qualified while unqualified mathematics teachers account for 40 percent of teachers at secondary level.
The administration block that was constructed at a cost of $12,000 saw the local community pooling resources together to improve infrastructure at the school that was established in 1927.
