A STILLBORN baby reportedly went missing last Friday at Mpilo Hospital, a family has said. The family claimed that a thorough search was conducted but the corpse could not be located prompting them to report the matter to the police.

Speaking to B-Metro, Benard Sibanda and Cythia Mpofu all from Dolale area under Chief Sikobokobo in Nkayi, said their niece, Knowlegde Tshuma, died soon after giving birth at Mpilo Hospital last Friday.

Tshuma had been transferred from Mbuma Hospital, in Nkayi after she developed complications while giving birth.

"We were shocked when we were given the body of our niece only. We then demanded the body of the baby as wel I but officials started dilly-dallying and promising that they will come back to us with the body.

"They told us that they could find the remains of the child. The mortuary staff conducted a thorough search for more than four hours but they failed to locate the remains of the baby. They told us that they only saw a tag," said Sibanda.

Sibanda said they were now between a hard place and a rock because relatives were demanding the remains of the stillborn baby.

"We are worried because our relatives back home are failing to understand us and they assume there is foul play.

Some relatives have openly registered their displeasure with us and are demanding the remains of the stillborn baby.

We are confused and at a loss for words about this energy sapping incident," said Sibanda.

When contacted for comment, Mpilo clinical director, Dr Wedu Ndebele, could neither deny nor confirm the incident but referred this publication to the police.

"The issue of the family from Nkayi is being handled by the police. May you phone the police, they will furnish you with details on what transpired," said Dr Ndebele

Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson Abednico Ncube could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
