A couple in Inyathi, Matabeleland North, is living in fear after mysterious deaths of their children and grandchildren.

Weird as it may sound, Bongani Nxumalo and Gogo MaDube are living in fear as they wait for their proverbial call from heaven. Other family members are forced to sleep with their eyes open like crocodiles, waiting for the unknown.

They allegedly live in fear of a serial killer uzimu, which is a mystical form of avenging spirit.

The Nxumalo family is appealing for divine intervention from prophets and pastors to pray for them and end the terror that has become a permanent part of their family.

Nxumalo said in July, eight of their children and grandchildren died from an unknown ailment. As if that was not enough this month, six have reportedly passed on. The deceased were not all staying with the elderly couple in Inyathi but all belong to the Nxumalo clan.

"My children and grandchildren have died mysteriously. The latest victim is Ntando. She died on Tuesday last week.

My child was fit as a fiddle and I had not heard her complain of any sickness.

"During the night I heard sounds coming from the room where she was sleeping and when her mother tried to wake her early in the morning, she was dead and had white foam coming from her mouthsaid Nxumalo.

Nxumalo said they took the deceased to I nyathi Hospital and the post-mortem report said the death was natural.

The distraught Nxumalo said the heart- rending problem briefly stopped in June after strong prayers from a prominent Bulawayo prophet but recurred in July.

Nxumalo said Ntando was victim number 20, some having passed on earlier. Gogo MaDube, with tears in her eyes, said her 34-year-old daughter Sithethelelwe was the first one to die in 2013.

She said they did not worry because she was not in good health. She, however, said after that it has been one death after another every month and that has made her family a subject of debate in the community.

"We don't know which one of us will be next. I had 15 children and 13 have died. All of them die in their sleep. I have also lost a lot of my grandchildren."

Nxumalo said according to a sangoma their tears are far from being over. He said the sangoma told them that his father allegedly killed a baby and the "wronged" family was hitting back through an avenging spirit.
