MATABELELAND SOUTH - As the wrangle between the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) and Gwanda Municipality rages, it has emerged that the local authority owes the parastatal about $6 million which it failed to remit from water sales for over three months.

Yesterday Zinwa said it cannot guarantee water supplies to Gwanda town and is in the process of consulting its lawyers on the way forward after the Gwanda municipality engaged police to force the restoration of water supplies.

Zinwa had cut supplies to the town, but police threatened to detain its Umzingwane Catchment manager Tommy Rosen for defying a High Court order, forcing the authority to restore water supplies.

The authority's corporate communications and marketing manager Marjorie Munyonga accused Gwanda of failing to pay its bills, saying this was also in violation of a High Court order.

"For the record, Gwanda municipality owes Zinwa in excess of $6 million and in terms of the provisional order in question, Gwanda is obliged to remit 70% of the money they collect from water sales to Zinwa, which they failed to do for the past three months," he said.
