TWO Midlands Regency Casino workers were on Wednesday hauled to court for allegedly stealing over $8,000 from their employer.

Garirai Mugabe, 31, of Athlone and Levy Makoni, 33, of Mkoba 7 appeared before Gweru magistrate Tendai Madanire.

For the state Kelvin Guvheya told the court that on October 26 around 12AM, the Midlands Regency Casino was closed after business.

Guvheya said the two made a reconciliation of the day's takings and left $8,695 in the safe which they locked using a dual locking system and went home.

Guvheya alleges that on the same day around 12PM, Velani Sithole, the Midlands Regency Casino manager, reported for duty and made a routine check on the premises and he found nothing wrong.

The court heard that after the check up, Sithole proceeded to his department for work.

At around 5PM the same day, Mugabe and Makoni reported for duty. They went to the safe and allegedly took the $8,695 they had left the previous night.

After taking the money, the duo allegedly called the company's general manager, Marvin Ndlovu, who is based in Harare informing him that the money had been stolen.

Investigations revealed that the safe and the safe housing together with the doors were intact.

The court heard that Mugabe and Makoni also told Sithole about the incident.

Guvheya said a report was made to the police who attended the scene and concluded there was no break-in at the casino as everything was intact.

Further investigations led to the arrest of the two accused persons.
