A JILTED 24-year-old man who was bitter because his 23-year-old ex-wife refused to get back with him will spend the next 18 months in jail after he burnt her property worth $1 200.
Courage Nhamo of Mberengwa arrived at Chandapiwa Dube's homestead in Ngwanyana area in Mangwe district in the middle of the night. He took her bag containing her clothes and blankets, poured six litres of cooking oil on them and set the property alight using matches.
He then proceeded to the kitchen hut and burnt down her kitchen door and two wooden doors which were in that hut.
Nhamo appeared before Plumtree magistrate Mr Gideon Ruvetsa facing a charge of malicious damage.
The court heard that Nhamo who had remained bitter after his separation with the complainant after blaming her of cheating on him proceeded to her homestead on 22 August.
Prosecuting, Mr Clemence Shawarira said Nhamo passed through the complainant's homestead on his way from Botswana around 10pm.
He found the complainant asleep and he woke her up demanding that they get back together.
The complainant refused and ordered her ex-husband to leave her home which angered Nhamo. She ignored him and proceeded to bed leaving Nhamo still in the house.
"Nhamo took a monarch bag containing the complainant's belongings and piled them outside her bedroom. He went to collect cooking oil from her kitchen hut and poured it onto the clothes and blankets and burnt them," said Mr Shawarira.
He said Nhamo also burnt down the complainant's kitchen door and two wooden doors in her kitchen.
Plumtree magistrate, Mr Gideon Ruvetsa lashed out at Nhamo for portraying such a violent behaviour.
"Your ex-wife has lost her valuable property which she probably worked very hard to get just because of your violent behaviour.
"There is always an amicable way of resolving conflicts but since it seems you do not abide by it maybe your perspective on resolving disputes will change once you have completed your jail term," said Mr Ruvetsa.
Mr Ruvetsa sentenced Nhamo to 24 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit an offence of the same nature.
