Obert Mpofu destabilises Mat North

The vote of no confidence passed against Zanu-PF Matabeleland North Provincial Central Committee members is null and void.

Investigations reveal that the purported booting out of the Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda; the Minister of Small to Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development, Sithembiso Nyoni; Central Committee nominee Fati Mpofu and Tsvata Mguni was done illegally.

The purported vote of no confidence was passed during an inter-district meeting attended by representatives from Umguza and Hwange districts.

Trouble started when Umguza representatives began demonstrating against Advocate Mudenda, Nyoni, Fati Mpofu and Mguni.

Representatives from Hwange responded by staging a counter demonstration against Umguza Politburo member, Obert Mpofu and Chairperson of the Provincial Congress Coordinating Committee.

It is alleged that Obert Mpofu then sought the assistance of police who came in riot gear and removed people from Hwange district.

Other members from Hwange were physically ejected in the full glare of journalists covering the meeting.

It has since emerged that only people from the same body can give a vote of no confidence in one of its members.

As such, the inter district meeting could only cause a petition to be sent to the Central Committee or the Provincial Elections Directorate, the Provincial Coordinating Committee and the Provincial Congress Coordinating Committee.

Obert Mpofu stands accused of acting unilaterally in what observers say is a misplaced fight for the chairmanship ahead of the congress.

This vote of no confidence came as a shock to many as Obert Mpofu had told the First Lady during her 'Meet the People Tour' that Matabeleland North was the only province without factionalism and where all party members were working in harmony.

Analysts feel such a development smacks of mischief of the worst kind given that it is taking place two days after Obert Mpofu had submitted to the Politburo the list of Central Committee nominees from his province and three days before the onset of the 6th Zanu-PF congress.

They say it is not necessary for people to waste their time campaigning or posturing for provincial chairpersonship as all candidates will be placed there by appointment.
