A 58-YEAR-OLD HIV positive Tsholotsho man was yesterday sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping his seven-year-old granddaughter. Senior Regional Magistrate Mark Dzira bemoaned the increase in child sexual abuse cases in the country.
He said the 20-year jail term was meant to send a warning to would-be offenders.
''You're therefore sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping the young girl knowing very well that you were putting her at a risk of contracting the virus," said Dzira.
Prosecuting, Tinashe Dzipe told the court that sometime in December 2013, the girl was left in the custody of her grandfather by her grandmother.
The grandfather took advantage of his wife's absence and raped the girl once before warning her against revealing the matter to anyone.
He also promised to buy her some snacks.
Later that month, the girl visited her parents and started complaining of stomach pains.
When she was questioned, she revealed what her grandfather had done to her.
A medical examination confirmed that she had been raped.
