A SCHOOL head allegedly killed his two month-old baby after forcing the tot to drink a poisonous pesticide after a quarrel with his wife.

Khangelani Zulu, 36, the headmaster of Jumbika Primary School in Lupane, fled after the incident shortly after 10AM on Sunday and is now on the run, according to his wife.

Roseline Moyo, 27, believes Zulu lost it after she dragged him to the maintenance court for neglecting his child, Bandile Moyo.

Moyo has since deserted her matrimonial home fearing that Zulu may come back and kill her.

The late Bandile was buried at St Luke's Mission Hospital cemetery on Monday.

Moyo told the Chronicle during at Daluka village in Lupane: "It was on Sunday morning at around 10 AM when I heard Bandile coughing. I was ironing clothes in another room and his father was playing with him in our bedroom.

"I walked in to check on my baby but to my surprise his father quickly rushed out of the room. Bandile was frothing at the mouth and beside him there was a sachet of Rogor (a common pesticide). I tried to call his father and he ran away leaving the baby crying."

Moyo said Bandile was taken to St Luke's Mission Hospital where he died on admission.

Fighting back tears, she said she was convinced Zulu poisoned Bandile in anger after she dragged him to the Bulawayo Magistrates' Courts seeking maintenance.

"On February 13, which was Friday, I went to the maintenance court at Tredgold to be assisted in forcing Zulu to take care of our children. We were always fighting over the upkeep of our children because Zulu was no longer supporting them," she said.

"We were happily married with my husband since 2009 until he started having an extramarital affair in 2013 with . . .. (name withheld)."

Zulu's aunt, Niniva Zulu, said they were shocked and saddened by the incident.

She said Zulu was a role model in the family and the two appeared in public as an exemplary couple.

"We're still shocked as a family about this incident. I don't know what prompted my son to do such cruelty. He was a calm person and he never mentioned that he was having problems with his wife. I can't even explain what happened, we were only alerted by our daughter-in-law that Zulu administered poison to their child," she said.

On Monday, a teenage mother from Mangwe murdered her seven-month-old son before trying to kill herself by drinking termite poison following a misunderstanding with her lover.

Thokozile Ndebele, 18, who stays at her grandparents' homestead in Guqukani Village, Tshitshi area, first fed her baby with the termite poison before drinking it herself. The teenager is fighting for her life in prison.
