THE wife of a police officer is suspected to be responsible for the abortion of a foetus that was found dumped at Gwanda Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Old Camp last Friday.

The suspect, whose name could not be immediately obtained, is said to be the wife of a police officer residing at the ZRP Old Camp.

Although maids working at the police officers' homes were initially suspected to be connected to the offence, it has now emerged that a cop's wife could be the culprit.

According to police sources, the policeman's wife is said to be a mother but has since been picked up by police officers for questioning over the issue of the dumped foetus.

"She became a suspect after realisation that she had difficulties in walking. Police were tipped about it and as a result she was picked up for questioning.

"She was taken to the Gwanda Provincial Hospital for screening to ascertain if she really was the culprit who aborted," said a source.

A medical report will determine whether the suspect has a case to answer.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed that a suspect was helping police with investigations.

He, however, could not give further details or disclose the identity of the suspect for fear of jeopardising investigations. "I can confirm that we picked a suspect to assist police with investigations. The matter is still under investigation," said Insp Ndebele.

On Friday morning last week, a foetus was found dumped and uncovered near the canteen and fowl run.

The foetus was then taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary.
