A 56 year old Tsholotsho woman allegedly went haywire and assaulted her four year old granddaughter to death after she found her playing at their neighbour's house on Thursday.

Betty Ndlovu allegedly punched the child, pulled her hair, banged her head on the ground and pulled her by her hair when the toddler disobeyed her and went to play at a neighbours homestead.

She allegedly scalded the child with boiling water in an effort to revive her, when she had beaten her into unconsciousness.

A police source told Bulawayo24 News that Ndlovu seemed possessed as she brutally assaulted the girl, adding villagers failed to restrain her.

He added that upon realising that Moyo was unconscious, Ndlovu quickly rushed into her house where she put boiling water in a pot and covered her granddaughter with a blanket ad forced her to inhale steam from the water.

Her plan to revive the child backfired when the girl fell into the pot face first.

She died as villagers rushed her to Tsholotsho District Hospital.

Ndlovu is expected to appear in court soon to face murder charges.
