THE MINISTER OF ENERGY AND POWER DEVELOPMENT Dr Samuel Udenge has said government is only able to electrify just one institution out of 47 in Matabeleland North Province this year due to shortages of funds.
Kulibambila Secondary School in Hwange is the lucky school and the rest would be electrified by 2018, the election year, Udenge told Parliament on Wednesday.
Said Udenge : "Let me start by thanking the honourable member for the important question. The implementation of the rural electrification programme is coordinated at provincial level. This was taken after consultations with relevant authorities within each province," he began his response.
"It is important to note that the Rural Electrification Projects are funded through a 6% rural electrification levy on electricity bills.
"For this year, the Rural Electrification Projects expects to receive about US$27 million towards rural electrification programmes. This money will be shared equally among the eight provinces, each getting about US$3.4 million"
"I think you will all appreciate that the resources are not enough to cover all the outstanding projects hence, the projects will be phased out. Out of the 47 institutions to be electrified in 2015 in the Matabeleland North Province, only Kulibambila Secondary School will be connected this year and six others are planned for next year. The remaining projects will be connected before 2018 as the Rural Electrification Project progresses with the programme,".
Most facility in the province are not electrified a move that is driving away qualified government personal in the region.
