Police officers collect the body of the late Zanele Ngwenya who committed suicide by hanging herself in Gwanda yesterday
A WOMAN allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree near a bridge in Gwanda Town yesterday following a misunderstanding with her boyfriend.
The woman identified as Zanele Ngwenya, 21, was found hanging from a tree at Manzamnyama River yesterday afternoon at around 3PM.
When The Chronicle arrived at the scene, scores of Gwanda residents were gathered and the body was still hanging from the tree.
Ngwenya hanged herself using a pair of jeans that was tied to the tree using a black belt.
The pair of jeans is believed to be hers as well as a bag which was found just next to the body.
The bag contained some of Ngwenya's belongings but her cellphone could not be found and it was unreachable.
Her sister's husband, Bongani Ndaba identified the body which was collected by the police at around 4.30PM for postmortem.
Ndaba said after learning that there was a woman who had hanged herself, he decided to investigate as his sister-in-law had previously threatened to take her own life.
He said Ngwenya was last seen on Thursday morning and did not return home.
"We last saw her yesterday when she was going to the flea market where she worked in town.
"She sent us a WhatsApp message today morning saying that she was going to hang herself but we just took it lightly," Ndaba said.
"I understand she was heard arguing with her boyfriend who is a soldier but I'm not privy to the details regarding their dispute. I believe the misunderstanding could have pushed her to kill herself."
Ndaba however said his wife probably had an idea of what could have pushed her sister to commit suicide.
The wife, Marble Dube could, however, not be reached on her mobile phone.
