President Mugabe should complete his two presidential terms as provided for in the Constitution to ensure the successful implementation of Zim Asset, a Zanu-PF official has said.
Zanu-PF Zvataida branch chairperson Blessing Chimanga said this during a cell verification meeting in Marlbrough's ward 41 in Harare at the weekend.
He also called for the sacking of heads of parastatals and boards appointed by former Ministers who were linked to former Vice President Joice Mujuru who were all fired from Government over allegations of corruption and planning to depose President Mugabe from office.
"Today marks Harare West's declaration that we will make sure President Mugabe is voted back into the office in the 2018 harmonised elections," said Chimanga to applause from hundreds of party supporters.
"He is still mentally and physically fit to stand in the 2018 election and lead us to 2023. This is in accordance with the new Constitution, which allows for two terms."
He said MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai's call for President Mugabe to retire on account of age dovetailed with assertions that opposition elements were working with former VP Mujuru who was fired for failure to perform her duties and plotting to oust President Mugabe.
"We stand in a place of strategic advantage with President Mugabe and there is no need to change a scoring striker. We say to Tsvangirai and those few misguided people, President Mugabe will be the zanu-pf candidate for 2018 election," he said.
Chimanga said for Zim Asset to succeed, there was need for President Mugabe's guidance. There was need for him to represent the revolutionary party in 2018 elections, he said.
He said State parastatals and enterprises were expected to play a key role in the success of Zim-Asset. "But those parastatals with 'gamatox leadership' will not deliver because they have a different vision from President Mugabe's. Those boards and management who were appointed by ministers who were part of the gamatox team are loyal to Mujuru." he said.
