Brother's wife rapist dies in hospital custody after taking poison

A 20-YEAR old man from Chief Nemhangwe's area in Gokwe who allegedly raped his wife and drank cotton pesticide to commit suicide has died under prison guards' custody at Gokwe hospital the following day after he appeared before Gokwe resident magistrate charged with rape.

The man who cannot be identified to protect the identity of his sister in law whom he allegedly rapped had appeared before Gokwe Resident magistrate Shepherd Mjanja on February 23 this year on his hospital bed side and reports say he passed on the following day due to the effects of the poison he took.

Court officials say even on the day when he appeared before the magistrate the smell of the chemical was all over him and had signs of a serious health condition.

Mjanja had remanded him to March 2 but on the day the court got a report that the man has since succumbed to death.

According to death records deposed in the court record the man died due to the effects of the poison he took.

The court heard that on February 10 this year the man went to his brother's bedroom where his sister in law (the wife to his brother) was alone at 2am. He knocked on the door and asked her to give him his identity card which he said was on top of the wardrobe. His brother's wife searched for it and told him that she is not able to find it.

The man allegedly asked her to open the door so that he searches for it himself. When his sister in law opened the door he allegedly got in wielding a knife and an axe. He allegedly closed and locked the door behind him before threatening to kill his brother's wife and ordering her to lie down. He allegedly raped her.

It is alleged that after the man allegedly took cotton pesticide and drank it leading him to be seriously ill. He was taken to Gokwe hospital where he is currently admitted.
