Cop charged with fraud and violation of traffic laws

A POLICE OFFICER based at Inyathi is in trouble after he was involved in an accident while driving his vehicle and later produced a fake certificate of competency.

The police officer Mkhokheli Moyo was not asked to plead to the charges of fraud and driving the vehicle without adequate and proper documentation when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Merilyn Mutshina. He was remanded out of custody to April 30 for trial.

The court heard that on February 1 this year Moyo was driving his vehicle an Opel Record Registration number ABQ 8137 at Inyathi Police Camp when he lost control of the car which veered off the road and hit a tree.

The accident was attended by the police from Mbembesi Traffic who instructed him to produce vehicle documents together with his driver's licence within seven days.

On February 9 Moyo with intent to deceive the police at Mbembesi Traffic produced a fake certificate of competency number 080209 purporting as if the certificate was genuine.

Investigations carried out revealed that the certificate of competency number 080209 produced by Moyo differed in number of entries from the fast copy kept at vehicle inspection depot in Bulawayo as records indicated that the said certificate was issued to Maidei Sibanda.

A fake certificate of competency number 080209 was confiscated by the traffic police.

This led to his arrest.
