A ZANU-PF official from Bulilima District ran over a 10-year-old boy from Mangwe District killing him on the spot.
The accident happened at a robot-controlled intersection in Plumtree on Tuesday morning when Dingumuzi Phuthi, a member of the party's Matabeleland South provincial executive, crushed Kellington Moyo's head beyond recognition with a Ford Ranger twin cab.
The vehicle belongs to Bulilima East House of Assembly Member, Mathias Siqhoza.
Phuthi, who was visibly shaken by the incident, said he suspects that the boy tripped before he was hit by the car.
Phuthi's colleague, Memory Marimazhira, who was a passenger in the vehicle, said they were turning right at a robot controlled intersection and the boy ran towards the car
The boy's mother, Ludo Dube, 34, of Madabe area, could only watch helplessly as the vehicle crushed her boy's head. A grieving Dube said she was waiting for her son, a Grade 5 pupil at Madabe Primary, on the other side of the road when the accident occurred at around 10AM.
"He didn't want me to hold his hand as we were crossing the road. So I left him behind and we proceeded with my young sister. We waited for him on the other side of the road and when he saw that he had remained behind alone, he rushed into the road coming after me.
"The car crushed his head and he rolled beneath it. He didn't even say a word afterwards and I knew that he was gone. I want my son back, bring him back to me. He has to go back to school," said a wailing Dube
The distraught mother, who was speaking with great difficulty, said they arrived in Plumtree yesterday morning from their rural home in Madabe area in Mangwe.
She said they were on their way to meet a relative who works in Botswana. Dube said after the meeting, they were supposed to return to their rural home on the same day.
"I tried to wake him up after the car hit him. I even called out his name and I held him in my arms but he didn't respond. His head had been crushed and there was a lot of blood all over the place," she said.
