The transit town of Beitbridge is set to get a major facelift with plans to construct a state-of-the-art bus rank as well as revive street lighting at an advanced stage, an official said yesterday.

Town secretary Loud Ramakgapola said the local authority has already tendered the rank project under a build-operate-transfer process. He said they have put to tender the project and construction will start soon.

It should be complete by three months and they expect a modern one.

Their position and location compels them to cater for transit population. Ramakgapola said they would also revive street lighting to curb muggings at night. Because of muggings, they need street lights.

"It is very key because so many people travel to and from South Africa any time, especially at night. And because of that, criminals take advantage of the increased volumes of human traffic and the darkness to steal from travellers," he added.

The town expects to trim its housing waiting list standing at 11 000 through two housing projects that have seen the developers acquiring land for residential stands, Ramakgapola added.

All in all, they have 2 000 stands for high-density areas being developed by FORIT and SDP Africa. ZB Bank is also constructing 150 housing units and hope this will ease the housing backlog that they have.
