A GUTU man, 45, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his ex-wife's family home after attempts to reconcile with her failed, police confirmed yesterday.

Stephen Mbirikira of Madzokere Village under Chief Chiwara was found hanging from a tree on Wednesday morning at his former wife's family home in Mucheke A, Masvingo, nine years after their divorce.

Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa said the man's body was discovered at around 6 AM.

"I can confirm receiving a report of a man from Gutu who hanged himself at his in-laws' house. Investigations are underway," Asst Insp Dehwa said.

Mbirikira's ex-wife Tendai Murinye, 36, told The Chronicle that Mbirikira came to their house on Tuesday night when she was already asleep and engaged her mother, Ketina Mabhuma, 91.

"I heard Mbirikira begging for forgiveness to my mother but never went out to meet him. I'd long ditched him but he kept on forcing me as he said he deserved another chance. He was an abusive husband who used to assault me," said Murinye.
