TWO people died while 11 others were injured, five of them critically, after a Toyota Granvia they were travelling in burst its left rear tyre, overturned and rolled several times. The accident occurred yesterday at around 8AM at the 90km peg along the Bulawayo-Plumtree Highway.

The vehicle, which was bound for Francistown, Botswana, was coming from Bulawayo.

Police identified one of the deceased women as Nokuthula Dube, 37, and Thandolwenkosi Bhebhe (age not given) both of Bulawayo. Dube died on the spot while Bhebhe died upon arrival at Plumtree District Hospital.

Survivors of the accident said the Granvia rolled five times and tossed out some of the passengers in the process.

Five of the passengers who were critically injured were referred to Bulawayo for treatment. Others were treated and discharged while a few more were still admitted at Plumtree District Hospital. One of the injured passengers, Simon Mutanga, 33, of Bulawayo said he was on his way to Botswana to do his shopping when tragedy struck.

"I boarded the Granvia at around 7AM and I was on my way to Botswana with the intention of returning in the evening. I heard a loud bang as the tyre burst and the next thing I remember is that the vehicle kept rolling.

"I'm not even sure how many times it rolled because I was tossed out of the car in the process. I had a blackout and regained consciousness a few minutes later to find myself lying on the ground. The vehicle was lying on its side a few metres away," he said.
