An Umguza man was left nursing head injuries after he was axed by his brothers-in-law for allegedly proposing love to other women when he was still married to their sister.

Ernest Sibanda was first assaulted by his wife's brothers, Partson Moyo and Mhlupheki Nkomo before the third sibling, Kenneth Nyoni, struck him with an axe.

Nyoni, 35, appeared before magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze to answer to an attempted murder charge. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to May 28.

Msipa-Marondedze advised Nyoni to apply for bail at the High Court.

"You'll be in custody until the trial date. If you want to be out of custody you've to apply for bail at the High Court because today isn't the trail date.

"Whatever you want to clarify you'll do it on the 28th of May," said Msipa-Marondedze.

Prosecuting, Nkathazo Dlodlo told the court that on May 10 at around 10PM in Rixi compound farm, Sibanda had a misunderstanding with Nyoni, Moyo and Nkomo. He said the three were accusing Sibanda of being unfaithful to their sister.

Nyoni, Moyo and Nkomo told Sibanda they were not amused by his tendencies of proposing love to other women while he is married to their sister, the court heard.

Dlodlo told the court that the three men started punching Sibanda and kicked him with their booted feet several times.

The prosecutor said Nyoni picked up an axe and struck Sibanda twice on the head.

Sibanda, the court heard, sustained a deep cut on the head and was taken to hospital.

Nyoni was arrested while Nkomo and Moyo are still at large.
