A GWANDA man yesterday offered $5 as maintenance for his 18-month-old daughter. Nompilo Tshuma of Emganwini dragged Lindani Moyo to the maintenance court demanding $100 for the upkeep of their baby.
The two appeared before Magistrate Gladmore Mushove. Tshuma pleaded with the court to force Moyo take responsibility for his child.
"I'm a vegetable vendor and I make about $5 a week which isn't enough to cater for my child as the cost of living is high," she said.
Moyo told the court that he is unemployed and living in his rural home.
He said he could only afford $5 a month.
Moyo argued that he has another child of the same age that he is not catering for.
Tshuma said Moyo started neglecting her and the baby when she was seven months pregnant.
"I was chased away by Moyo when I was seven months pregnant and had to prepare for the baby by myself after he had impregnated another woman," she said.
Tshuma told the court that she owed Mpilo Central Hospital $78 adding that the debt was preventing her from acquiring a birth certificate for their child.
She pleaded with the court to make Moyo help her to settle the hospital bill.
The magistrate ruled that Moyo should pay $5 every month for maintenance.
