A massive roads network rehabilitation project expected to cost Beitbridge Town Council nearly US$300 000 has been began. The project includes tarring and re-surfacing major link and feeder roads.
According the town engineer Mr Maxwell Karenyi, the project, which started early this month, would be carried over three months. Mr Karenyi said work was progressing well and they hoped to complete the project within the expected time frame.
He said they had completed resealing the road linking the bus terminus, the hospital and the main road, which leads to the border post.
"We are happy with the progress on the ground as we move on to develop the town in line with modern standards.
"We are carrying out the project in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and this will go a long way in cutting costs involved in such a massive project. So far we have completed resealing the 800 metre-stretch linking Dulibadzimu bus terminus, the hospital and the border post. We expect to spend around US$300 00 on the project.
"Currently we are working on the 1 800 metres road which stretches from Mashakada via the Mashavire business centre and links with the great north highway which links the town to Harare and Bulawayo. On this portion we have 1 000 metres ready for surface dressing.
"We hope to complete the project in October this year. You will realise that we have since secured most of the required material that is now onsite.
"Apart from tarring that section, workers are also busy doing maintenance and re-gravelling most roads around the town. Along these new major roads we have started planting trees.
"This project is in-line with the town's development thrust. We have seen that most of the areas were not accessible and hence we want to give the residents value for their money. At the same time we want to urge them to pay their rates so that we remain a viable local authority and be able to work on most developmental projects around the town," he said.
