Villagers in Tsholotsho are calling for communal tolling to help surface rural feeder roads, ZBC News reported.
The state of rural feeder roads remains a major impediment to development due to inaccessibility in the country's communal areas.
In light of this, villagers from Mkubazi area of Tsholotsho under Chief Ngqoya say the maintenance of gravel roads is expensive and are calling for a comprehensive programme to surface all rural roads.
Responding to the appeal, District Development Fund (DDF) Matabeleland North Provincial Planning and Construction Officer, Mr Moment Malandu, whose department is to rehabilitate 469 km of road network in Tsholotsho, said while the initiative of rural toll gates is an acceptable suggestion from villagers, the issue is a policy one.
On the provision of clean drinking water for the province, Mr Malandu said the Matabeleland North Province needs seven drilling rigs compared to one they have at the moment.
He said out of 4 103 boreholes fitted with hand pumps, 1305 of these have broken down.
DDF needs additional capital injection in order to effectively discharge its mandate.
