A FORM Four Tsholotsho High School pupil committed suicide by hanging after she allegedly squandered R1,200 in rentals paid by their family tenant while her mother was in South Africa.
Samantha Thando Ndlovu, 16, was found hanging from a tree in their yard in Efusini suburb, Tsholotsho in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The pupil's aunt Nontobeko Ndlovu said their family suspects that Samantha hanged herself over the money she received when her mother was in South Africa where she works.
Ndlovu said Samantha had a heated argument with her sister Precious Mabulo, 22, the previous night when she failed to account for the money she had been given and it is suspected that she squandered it.
The R1,200 in rentals covered four months.
"Precious, who stays at a house a few metres away from were Samantha lived went to her place and asked Samantha for the R1,200 that she had received from one of the tenants. One of the tenants said she witnessed the girl being given the money," said Ndlovu.
She said it seems that the girl felt pressured over the money.
"I think she just took the story in a hard way because they had discussed the issue the previous night and next morning we heard she had been found hanging," added the girl's aunt.
Family spokesperson, Victor Ncube said they were in deep shock over the suicide.
"No-one anticipated such an incident especially from a girl who was intelligent at school. We suspect she got confused on how she would resolve the matter since she no longer had the cash," he said.
"My daughter has greatly disappointed us by leaving us in great shock. There was no reason for her to go to such lengths. We believe this is the work of the devil which drove her to such limits. Samantha was overdriven by emotions but we wish she had talked about the issue rather than resolve to die."
Mourners are gathered at her rural homestead at Manqe Village, Tsholotsho and she is expected to be buried today.
