A DARING man from Lupane, who raped his 63-year-old grandmother, later beat her up claiming she had stolen his jacket which he had misplaced while raping her.
The 32-year-old from Matshiya Village in Lupane pleaded guilty when he appeared before regional magistrate Mrs Dambudzo Malunga facing two charges - rape and assault.
He shocked the courts before his sentencing on Thursday when he claimed evil spirits had taken him for a ride in a "moment of madness" because of his drunken stupor.
"Your Worship, I don't know what happened, I was drunk at the time. I'm sure the devil took advantage of my mental state and made me do those abominable acts in a moment of madness," he said.
However, the magistrate was unmoved by his pleas, expressing her displeasure at his actions before slapping him with an effective 15-year jail term.
Another six months were added for assault.
The court heard that on 22 July this year at around 9pm the man arrived at his grandmother's home from a beer drink where he found her asleep in her bedroom hut. He banged on the door before getting inside when he received no answer.
The granny, who was deep in sleep, was startled when she heard movement in her room. She quickly jumped off bed looking for a light and was relieved when she heard her grandson greeting her in the darkness.
However, her relief was short-lived as, to her horror, she heard him ordering her to lie on the bed. She resisted the order wondering what had gotten into her grandson. He dragged her onto the bed.
He pressed the helpless old woman before raping her once.
After the act, he went away and returned after a while and found her still inside with the door unlocked. After failing to locate his jacket which he had removed before raping his grandmother, the man beat her with fists and kicked her.
She managed to escape but while attempting to seek refuge at her neighbour's homestead, he caught up with her. He dragged her back to the bedroom hut, closed the door and went away after threatening her.
At around 3am, the old woman braved the darkness of the night and ran to her neighbour's homestead where she narrated her ordeal.
A report was made to police in Lupane, leading to her grandson's arrest.
In mitigation, he blamed alcohol and the devil for his actions, arguing that he was not in control during the "moment of madness".
Mr Tawanda Sigauke appeared for the State.
