A BINGA police officer has been arrested for luring a Grade Seven pupil with $2 to buy food on her way home before raping her. Hwange magistrate Portia Mhlanga was told yesterday that Edmos Nkala, 29, who resides at ZRP Dete staff quarters, but works at ZRP Binga Police Station, gave the 14-year-old girl money to buy biscuits and chips and then proposed love to her.
When she turned him down, Nkala allegedly dragged her into the bush and raped her. Other pupils who saw blood on her questioned her and when she failed to give a convincing answer, they reported the case to the police leading to Nkala's arrest. Nkala was not asked to plead to the rape charge and was remanded in custody to September 28. The alleged rape took place recently near Lupane State University garden in Dete at 3PM, but the exact date was not given.
Prosecuting, Fadzayi Mharadze told how Nkala lured the girl who was walking home from school in the company of other pupils and went on to rape her in a bush near the garden. "On a date not known to the prosecutor, the complainant was walking in the company of her friends when she asked for water from Lupane State University garden.
"The accused who was sitting in the garden drinking beer called the complainant and gave her $10 so she could buy food for herself for $1," said the prosecutor. The prosecutor said the girl went to Dete shops and bought a packet of biscuits and chips. She then gave Nkala $9 change. "The accused handed the girl another $1. He took a small piece of paper and wrote a note expressing his love for the girl.
"When she turned him down, he then dragged her into a nearby bush where he threatened to kill her and raped her once," said Mharadze. The court heard that the girl bled as a result of the rape. After the act, Nkala released her and she proceeded home with other pupils from her school.
Nkala went back to the garden and continued drinking beer with his friends. The other pupils noticed blood stains on the girl's dress and questioned her. When she failed to give a convincing answer, they reported the case to the police leading to Nkala's arrest.
