A MBEMBESI gold panner has been arrested for assaulting his wife with a knobkerrie and attacking his mother-in-law with an axe following a domestic dispute.
Mzimkhulu Majola, 30, allegedly slapped his wife Fikile Ndlovu, 23, after he found her sleeping with another man and then attacked Fiselani Mpofu, 62, who had come to rescue her daughter.
The incident occurred at a time when Ndlovu had gone to her parents' home following a misunderstanding with her husband.
Majola appeared before magistrate Sheunesu Matova, on circuit in Inyathi, facing two counts of physical abuse.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to Friday for trial.
Prosecuting, Lungisani Dube told the court that Majola assaulted his wife on September 2 at her parents homestead after a long argument.
"The complainant was at her parents' homestead at 2AM when the accused forced himself into her bedroom and found her with another man. The accused confronted his wife and demanded an explanation and the noise led to the mother-in-law coming to the bedroom," he said.
The court heard that Ndlovu's lover escaped and Majola started slapping his wife before attacking her with a knobkerrie several times on the back.
"When Mpofu tried to rescue the complainant, Majola charged towards her, picked an axe and hit her on the forehead. Realising that she was bleeding, the complainant ran away," said the prosecutor.
Mpofu was rushed to hospital and treated.
A report was made to the police leading to Majola's arrest.
A medical report showed that Mpofu sustained lacerations on the forehead and Ndlovu had bruises on her back.
